Mode of entry into the RP:
Refugee from a destroyed world, awakes aboard Jenova’s ship.

History:
Born the heir to the world-controlling Shinra Company, Rufus was appointed Vice President at a fairly young age, and later succeeded the Presidency after his father met an untimely end at the point of Sephiroth's blade. Young and arrogant, he rattled off an inauguration speech revealing his intention to govern the world through fear. Little came of this, however, for after a brief stint in office, the world fell into crisis, and Rufus and Shinra Company took up the role of defending the Planet's people from the Planet's defence mechanism -- super beings known only as the WEAPONs -- and a magically summoned Meteor that threatened to obliterate the world.

He fell in the battle when a blast from one of the WEAPONs destroyed his Midgar office with him in it, reappearing to public eye only 2 years later (in the events of Advent Children), beset by the uncurable and fatal disease called Geostigma. There, he spoke of a debt to the world that he sought to repay, although one of his goals was still the rebuilding of his lost Company. Unbeknownst to the public, he was also financing the World Restoration Organisation. He battled briefly with Kadaj, and was subsequently healed of Geostigma shortly before the destruction of the world.

Personality:
Focused and intense, Rufus prefers to fight with his brains and leave the brawn to the Turks, although he does favour high-powered firearms. While his initial arrogance and overconfidence faded with time, leaving behind some sort of quiet guilt (which he completely denies), he retains a commanding, seemingly unflappable presence, and an infinite capacity for snark.

This, however, has been badly shaken by his role in allowing Kadaj to obtain Jenova’s remains, which was a critical step in bringing about the destruction of Gaia. A shaken Rufus is an angry, defensive, and unstable Rufus, and one who is more likely to shed the wisdom of his years in exchange for the mistakes of his past.

In addition, it is said that Rufus’ father, the former President, went mad before the end, and that madness is sometimes hereditary...

[For the purposes of Arcadia, Rufus is presently under the effects of Jenova's dark water. This has resulted in his rather confused loyalty towards Jenova in general and Kadaj in specific, a conflicting three way desire to please his adoptive family, to outdo his 'brothers' and win Jenova's respect, and to throw off Jenova's reins. His memories are warped, some lost, but occasionally the effects of the water subside and his own free will struggles to resurface.

Under the effects of the water, Rufus has unlearnt a lot of lessons painfully learnt during the past two years, regressing back to a spoilt, brattish prince who occasionally emulates Kadaj (rather unsuccessfully). Thus, Rufus is deliberately slightly OOC.

The 'actual' Rufus is the one we see in Advent Children - sly, slimy and sarcastic, but one who wields the iron fist within a velvet glove, and knows the value of diplomacy. It is a President who knows that fear is a weapon, but only one of many, and has come to appreciate that those who follow you out of love (or at least respect) are less prone to blowing up the world than those who follow you out of fear. It is also a President who knows the meaning of fear, knows that he is not infallible, and has learnt caution in picking his plans and enemies.

Abilities:
Nothing special. Rufus really is a very ordinary human, who relies entirely on his Turks and his wits to get him out of situations. He can use materia, except that he doesn't have any, and can wield a number of firearms, except that he doesn't have them at the moment either.
